Jessica's Story:

I was born on September 20th, 1990, in Seoul, South Korea. At four months old, I was adopted by my wonderful parents, Jim and Kathy. Since then I’ve lived in Chelsea, Michigan my whole life. I also have an older brother, Andy, who was adopted from Korea as well. I grew up with cats and llamas, which is probably what made me the biggest animal lover in the world.

I graduated from Chelsea High School, and went on to study at Central Michigan University for a short time. After a lot of thought, I decided I wanted to give court reporting school a whirl. I knew what court reporting was because I have an aunt who currently captions for the U.S. Senate, and I have a cousin who is an official reporter in North Carolina.

I studied at Text Stream Institute of Court Reporting under the instruction of Rhonda Taylor and Debbie Beebe. I excelled rapidly through each speed building course. I actually completed my speed building well before I was able to complete all the academic courses. In the end, I graduated Text Stream after a year and a half, and what an accomplishment that was.

I am a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design (BFA 2009). Since birth I have had severe-to-profound hearing loss, and I was raised orally. For years I managed to get along in the classroom with the use of hearing aids and lip-reading, but after struggling to keep up in an information intensive seminar class in college, I decided to research the services available to me as a student. With the help of the Student Disability office at Kendall I finally received CART. I was very happy to have Annette as a CART reporter for two classes. She always transcribed everything verbatim, even while dealing with some very fast paced professors. For the first time, I could focus my energies on learning what the teacher was saying. Annette was always on time, cheerful, and accommodating of my needs. Without fail, she sent me the edited transcript of the class discussion the next day, so I could review it while studying. It was a pleasure to have known Annette, and I would not hesitate to recommend her services to anyone.
